When the winter comes, ants will go into hibernation to survive the cold temperatures. It is not until the spring when the weather warms up that they start showing up again. They will desperately be in need of food after the winter, and chances are that they will seek out nearby homes to look for it. Nobody likes ants in their home, but there are ways to prevent an invasion from happening.
Do Spring Cleaning In The Late Winter
One reason that you have a trail of ants going through your home is because there is food somewhere that they want. Ants survive by sending a scout ant to go find food. They will leave a trail of pheromones behind them so that they can find their way back to the nest, and for other ants to follow to the food. The worker ants follow this trail, taking food back to the nest, until all the food is gone.
If you do not have food around your home, the ants will not come out in droves to find it. That's why you want to do your spring cleaning near the end of winter, before ants come out of hibernation. Wash your floors thoroughly, pick up crumbs, and get rid of anything that ants will feed off of. If you wait too long, the ants may find the food before you can clean it.
Inspect Your Home's Exterior
Look over the exterior walls of your house. If you have cracks in the mortar, ants will use them to find a way inside your house. If you have excessive cracking, you may need professional tuck-pointing to take care of the problem. Small cracks can be filled with caulk, and are a great way to stop the ants from getting in.
Place gravel around the outside of your house next to your foundation. It will stop ants from walking up to your house. Get rid of grass that is growing all the way to the foundation, because it will make traveling easier for the ants.
Hire An Exterminator
If you tried these tips to prevent ants, and they are still getting into your home, you may need the help of an exterminator. They will be able to place bait around your home that the ants will take back to their nest, and hopefully kill all of the ants in the process. It's the only way to not just stop ants from getting into your home, but getting rid of them for good.
